Does your dog bark or lunge at people or other dogs?
Is your dog fearful or anxious?
Does your dog have a meltdown when people come to your home?
Are walks a nightmare and home life stressful?
You've come to the right place. We can help.
The first question we ask is: what is driving the behaviour? It's important to look not just at the dog's behaviour, but at the motivation and emotion behind the behaviour so that we can implement the right strategy. Fear and anxiety are common causes of reactivity and aggression but other causes commonly include: frustration; guarding behaviours, especially in certain breeds; and chase or prey drive based behaviour. We will work with you to determine what is causing the behaviour and to implement an effective strategy. The principles of our approach are to:
- Help the dog feel safe
- Work with the dog "under threshold", meaning that we work with the trigger at a level the dog can handle
- Prioritize the dog's emotions
- Use well known and effective techniques such as counter conditioning and desensitization and other positive reinforcement based strategies
- Set the situation up so that the dog can make good choices
- Use management to help the dog avoid practicing the undesirable behaviour in daily life
We can help with:
- Fear - including fear of handling, and fear of people, other dogs or noise
- Frustration-based reactivity on leash
